A new social media trend encouraging the harvesting of wild seafood from Hong Kong's outlying islands is raising significant concerns among environmentalists and health officials. The practice, popularized through online videos and posts, sees residents and tourists alike combing rocky shores for shellfish, sea urchins, and other marine life, often without proper permits.
Conservation groups warn that this unregulated foraging is causing tangible environmental damage. The removal of large quantities of intertidal species disrupts local ecosystems, depletes food sources for other wildlife, and damages fragile coastal habitats through trampling and overturning rocks. The trend directly conflicts with the region's efforts to promote sustainable eco-tourism, which aims to protect natural assets rather than exploit them.
Furthermore, the Department of Health has issued stern warnings about serious health risks. Consuming these wild catches carries a high danger of shellfish poisoning, caused by natural toxins that are not destroyed by cooking. Symptoms can range from severe gastrointestinal illness to neurological effects and, in extreme cases, can be fatal. Authorities emphasize that these coastal waters are not monitored for such biotoxins, making every foraged meal a potential gamble. Officials are urging the public to enjoy the coastline responsibly and to only consume seafood from approved and regulated sources.
