Need heightened sensitivity towards environment while promoting tourism in J-K: Manoj Sinha

Srinagar, Jul 27 (PTI) As tourist arrivals in Jammu and Kashmir hit an all-time high, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Monday urged stakeholders to adopt a more sensitive approach toward the environment while continuing to promote the region as a top travel destination. Speaking at the "Ethical Tourism Conclave" organized by the Tourist Trade Interest Guild, Sinha emphasized that the surge in visitors must not come at the cost of the fragile Himalayan ecosystem.

Sinha acknowledged the economic benefits of the tourism boom but warned that unchecked growth could lead to long-term environmental degradation. He called for a balanced strategy that prioritizes sustainable practices, waste management, and the preservation of local culture. The Lieutenant Governor also highlighted the need for responsible behavior among tourists and the local industry alike, urging them to treat the region's natural beauty as a shared heritage rather than a commodity to be exploited.

The conclave focused on ethical guidelines for the sector, including reducing plastic use, protecting water bodies, and supporting community-based tourism initiatives. Sinha's remarks signal a shift in policy thinking, aiming to ensure that the record footfall translates into lasting benefits for both the economy and the environment.
