The CCOO union has put forth a proposal for a €15 daily tourist tax during the peak months of July and August in the Balearic Islands. This initiative aims to address the growing issue of overtourism, which has placed immense pressure on local resources and the environment. The tax is designed not only to regulate the influx of visitors but also to generate funds that can be reinvested into community welfare and environmental protection initiatives.
Local leaders and environmental advocates have expressed support for the proposal, highlighting the need for sustainable tourism practices that benefit both residents and the natural landscape. The funds collected from the tax could be allocated towards enhancing public services, preserving local ecosystems, and improving infrastructure to accommodate both tourists and locals more effectively.
As the Balearic Islands continue to attract millions of visitors each year, this proposed tax represents a significant step towards balancing economic growth with ecological sustainability and community well-being.
