A new wave of climate-conscious tourism is moving beyond simply reducing harm, and students are now testing the concept in the field. Two initiatives from the Climate School, the Wild Tomorrow capstone workshop and the Cuttyhunk Practicum, are putting regenerative travel principles into practice. Instead of just offsetting carbon footprints, these programs aim to leave destinations better than they were found.
The Wild Tomorrow workshop sends students to South Africa to work on restoring degraded ecosystems. Participants help with reforestation, wildlife corridor mapping, and community conservation planning. The idea is that travel can actively repair environmental damage rather than just minimize it. On the other side of the globe, the Cuttyhunk Practicum takes students to a small island off the coast of Massachusetts. There, they study the impacts of seasonal tourism on a fragile coastal environment and develop strategies for sustainable visitor management.
Both programs emphasize hands-on learning. Students are not just observing; they are collecting data, building infrastructure, and collaborating with local stakeholders. The goal is to train a new generation of travelers and tourism professionals who see their trips as opportunities for ecological restoration. Early feedback suggests that participants leave with a deeper understanding of how tourism can be a tool for positive change, not just a source of strain. As the industry looks for ways to rebuild after years of disruption, these field tests offer a glimpse of what a truly regenerative travel model might look like.
