Costa Rica Cuts Corcovado Visitor Capacity Over Wastewater Problems : The Tico Times | Costa Rica News | Travel

Costa Rica has announced a reduction in the daily visitor limit for Corcovado National Park, one of the country's most biodiverse and popular protected areas. The decision comes after authorities identified ongoing problems with wastewater management within the park's facilities.

The new cap lowers the number of allowed visitors from 400 to 300 per day. Officials from the Ministry of Environment and Energy stated that the change is necessary to prevent further strain on the park's sanitation infrastructure. Wastewater treatment systems have been struggling to keep up with the volume of human waste, raising concerns about contamination of local rivers and coastal waters.

Corcovado, located on the Osa Peninsula, is known for its rich wildlife including jaguars, tapirs, and scarlet macaws. The park attracts thousands of eco-tourists each year. However, the remote location makes infrastructure maintenance difficult. Park rangers have reported that existing septic systems and treatment plants are outdated and require significant upgrades.

The reduced capacity will remain in effect until repairs and improvements are completed. Environmental groups have praised the move, saying it protects both the ecosystem and the visitor experience. Travelers planning trips to Corcovado are advised to book well in advance, as the lower limit means spaces will fill quickly.
