As World Oceans Month kicks off in June, hotels, tour operators, and coastal destinations are rolling out a wave of programs aimed at protecting marine ecosystems. The annual observance, which aligns with World Oceans Day on June 8, has become a key moment for the travel industry to shift from simply using ocean resources to actively preserving them.
Several resort chains have launched guest-led cleanup dives, where visitors can join marine biologists to remove debris from coral reefs. Others are eliminating single-use plastics entirely, replacing them with biodegradable alternatives in restaurants and guest rooms. Tour operators specializing in snorkeling and whale watching are now funding research on microplastics and training guides to educate travelers about responsible wildlife viewing.
Destinations like the Maldives and the Great Barrier Reef region are also stepping up. Local governments are partnering with hotels to restore mangrove forests and seagrass meadows, which act as natural carbon sinks. Some properties now offer discounted stays for guests who volunteer with conservation groups during their trip.
The push comes as studies show that tourism accounts for a significant portion of ocean pollution, but also holds the power to fund large-scale restoration. By tying travel experiences directly to ocean health, the industry hopes to turn a month of awareness into lasting habits. For travelers, the message is clear: the best souvenir might be a cleaner sea.
