A stark new report from the World Bank is sounding the alarm over a rapidly growing waste crisis in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), urging immediate and decisive action to avert severe environmental degradation and major blows to the vital tourism sector by mid-century.
The region currently generates approximately 150 million tons of municipal solid waste annually, a figure projected to double by 2050 if current trends persist. Much of this waste ends up in open dumps and landfills, leading to soil contamination, water pollution, and increased greenhouse gas emissions. This unchecked pollution directly threatens fragile ecosystems, public health, and the natural landscapes that are cornerstones of the area's tourism appeal.
The Bank emphasizes that the tourism industry, a critical economic pillar for many MENA nations, is particularly vulnerable. Degraded coastlines, polluted beaches, and litter-strewn historical sites could significantly deter visitors, resulting in substantial economic losses. The report calls for a systemic shift toward a circular economy, with massive investments needed in modern waste collection, recycling infrastructure, and policies that reduce waste generation at the source.
Officials stress that the cost of inaction far outweighs the investment required for reform. Implementing sustainable waste management is now framed not just as an environmental imperative, but as an urgent economic necessity to safeguard the region's future prosperity and heritage.
